  • WTN supports Timanyane Day again this year

Prince Henry's Grammar School Year 10 students have worked on a variety of projects around Otley again this year as part of Timanyane Day activities.

One group of seven students and two members of staff came to the WTN studio to try their hand at reading and recording under the watchful eyes of three of our volunteers.

The students enjoyed reading articles from their school magazine and also took turns at recording each other.

Their efforts were rewarded with juice and biscuits, hopefully a small consolation for the fact that they had arrived at the studio soaking wet after walking a mile from school in a downpour!

The recording the students made was added to this week's Talking News broadcast (11th July) for all our listeners to enjoy.

  • Wharfedale Talking News

Following Ilkley Talking Newspaper's recent difficult decision to close, Otley & District Talking Newspaper has now welcomed listeners from Ilkley and the surrounding area.

As the area we serve has increased, we have changed our name to Wharfedale Talking News. All our listeners now receive articles from both the Wharfedale Observer and the Ilkley Gazette each week. We also include a selection of radio listings and audio-described television listings for the coming week, together with national stories from the Talking News Federation (TNF). The newspaper is available online and delivered free of charge on memory sticks for all of our visually impaired listeners.

We are delighted that some of the former Ilkley TN volunteers have decided to join us so we can now also provide a monthly magazine.

  • Wharfedale Talking News continues to support Timanyane Day

Wharfedale Talking News will once again be supporting Prince Henry’s Timanyane Day.

"Timanyane Day" (which means "Let's know each other") is where Prince Henry’s focuses on themes of Global Citizenship, Sustainability, Social Justice, Equality and Diversity.

Year 10 students (14 to 15 year olds) spend the day working with community projects with a number of different organisations across Otley, Pool and Bramhope. We hope that they will be able to record some of their school magazine while they are with us.

  • Return to the studio

For many months now as you know, those who could, have continued to produce the Otley & District Talking Newspaper, recording at home. But we have of course missed being together and so we are delighted to let you know that we are heading back to the studio in March. We really hope that you will be able to join us again.

There are two important changes to note. First that with the impending sale of the Methodist church, we have moved to a new venue in Otley - The Chestnuts on Burras Lane. And second, that we are preparing, reading, and recording the paper on a Thursday.

There are several different roles to fill - wallets, editor, producer, reader, and technician. Training will be given if needed and please do ask if you want to know more about any of the roles. Volunteers usually sign up for about once a month.

Covid - we suspect we all have different views on what we should be doing over the coming weeks and months to keep ourselves and each other as safe as possible. We have created a Code of Conduct which we hope strikes a balance between recording together again and taking reasonable measures to protect each other. Do have a read as this is an important part of returning to the studio.

We hope you will be able to return and take up one of these roles. Let us know what you might like to do, and we will be in touch,
